Lesson 8 – Proportion

Here are a few drawing for lesson 8. I’m not too happy with their accuracy, I think it was an off day, I even forgot the ape’s ear! More drawings coming soon.

Lesson 7b – My own poses

This lesson was to create our own poses of a generic character using all the drawing tools we have learned about so far. That is, Line of action, construction, negative space, silhouettes. There is some self critique below the image.

My main issue with these is that I’ve used a lot of poses where the hands touch the face. This doesn’t create a strong silhouette, and I’m not sure if it would be acceptable to have 3 of my 5 key poses not ‘out in the clear’. The big exception is the fourth pose where Jerry jumps into the air, I think it has good silhouette.

Maybe it just needs better staging. For example with the second image where Jerry is biting his nails, I could have drawn it in profile and then the nail biting would read as silhouette. Also in the last image maybe Jerrys feet would be better spread apart?

I think I’ve reached a point where self critique is lacking answers and I need to seek a pro’s opinion.

More on lesson 4

Here’s another copy of a bugs still. I feel I’m improving. The big mistake here is that the head is too small. I still need to pay more attention to proportion in the initial stages of the drawing before getting bogged down with details.

Goofy copy and compare

More copying and comparing, this time from a Goofy model sheet.

PS: collar is too small & upper chest/shoulder too narrow . And I just realised there is another construction sphere indicating that the hat is one head high. Need to use my eyes better before I pick up the pencil me thinks!

Heckling Hair 2nd attempt

After comparing and identifying problems with my Heckling Hair drawing I had another go:

Heckling Hare study

After reading John’s post about construction and watching the Heckling Hare videos (here) I had a go myself – see below for a comparison to the original.

I felt better about this drawing than my previous couple of attempts. I really enjoyed drawing it, and felt that I was putting the step by step construction method that John talks about into practice better. It ain’t three yet but I feel hyped to go do more.. so adios!
